How Do You Achieve Effective Workplace Motivation?

Effective workplace motivation is vital to achieve organizational goals. It includes your self motivation as well as your employee motivation.

To improve employee motivation, first you need to know-

What motivates people?

Once you know the answer, 'how to motivate' will be an easier task.

People's needs and desires guide their behaviour and thus control their motivation. These needs and desires vary from person to person and people get motivated by different factors at different times. While one person is motivated by money, another goes after the type of work he loves, even with less money.

Thus, workplace motivation is a complex issue as you need to deal with people with different motivational factors.

According to the theory proposed by Professor Steven Reiss, there are 16 basic desires/needs that guide people behavior:

  • Acceptance: the need for approval
  • Curiosity: the need to think
  • Eating: the need for food
  • Family: the need to raise children
  • Honor: the need to be loyal to the traditional values of one's clan/ethnic group
  • Idealism: the need for social justice
  • Independence: the need for individuality
  • Order: the need for organized, stable, predictable environments
  • Physical Activity: the need for exercise
  • Power: the need for influence of will
  • Romance: the need for sex
  • Saving: the need to collect
  • Social Contact: the need for friends (peer relationships)
  • Status: the need for social standing/importance
  • Tranquility: the need to be safe
  • Vengeance: the need to strike back

Self motivation is the basic thing before you attempt motivating others.

Keep the following factors in mind to improve employee motivation ( workplace motivation ):

  1. Create a culture that values and recognizes performance, creativity and innovation.

  2. Use fair and constructive judgment and avoid destructive criticism.

  3. Rightful disagreement is not disobedience.

  4. Encourage exchange of ideas.

  5. Allow people to take decisions appropriate to their respective levels and don't interfere in small day-to-day decisions. But you must be aware of the decisions they make.

  6. Give opportunity to use their skills and knowledge. Encourage improvement in individual capabilities and performance.

  7. See that people are clear about the goals and expectations.

  8. See that the work- has variety, is challenging and gives opportunity for the development of the people involved.

  9. Sense of belonging, participation in planning and decision making improve motivation.

  10. Make sure of reasonable workload all the time.

  11. Be careful, over stress on extrinsic rewards can lead to reduction in intrinsic motivation in the long run.

  12. Facilitate people to work, grow, and find answers independently.

  13. Make people aware of the negative consequences of not achieving results

  14. Divide bigger goals into many smaller ones with their own deadlines. Completing each smaller goal boosts motivation.

  15. Create enjoyable work environment. A little fun and recreation now and then ease tension and recharge people.

  16. Make yourself approachable. Communication is very important.
