The Process Of Building Self Esteem
Your self improvement and motivation starts with building self esteem. Learn the process of overcoming low self esteem.
What is Self Esteem?
Self esteem is your own assessment of your worthiness. Your beliefs, emotions, behaviour and confidence indicate your self esteem. It can apply to a specific activity (I believe I am a good sales person) or it can be generic (I believe I am a good person). Your self esteem is evident in the way you look, feel, talk, interact and behave.
Self esteem is a basic human need and very important one in the process of your self improvement. It is a personality concept: having competency to cope up with the basic challenges of life and being worthy of success and happiness.
It's how much you value yourself and how important you think you are. It's how you see yourself and how you feel about your achievements.
Why Building Self Esteem Is Important?
High self-esteem gives you the power to believe in yourself. It gives you confidence on your capability. It gives you the courage to try out new things.
I have come across people who don't think much of it, when they achieve reasonable things in life. But the same people, when they make a small mistake, take it very negatively. My suggestion is- appreciate even small achievements. Pat on your back. What ever mistakes you do or failures you face, learn from them and carry on. Grow 'feel good' attitude. No successful person succeeded without failures. So how do you start the process of building self esteem? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. Stand in front of a mirror and look at the person in front of you. What do you see? His looks, facial expressions, body language, posture, dress, hairstyle... - Do you like him?
- Do you trust him?
- Do you like to work with him?
- Do you like him to be your friend?
- Do you love him?
Please note down, honestly, the positive and negative points that came to your mind- on his looks, posture, dress, hairstyle... All positive points? Wonderful. Do you have a few negative points as well? No worry. Give him suggestions on how to improve. How to remove some of the negative points and to turn others into positive? But be aware, there are certain features that can't be changed, for example- his skin colour, the way his body was designed... | I had the blues because I had no shoes until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet.- Denis Waitley |
Observe him more closely. Peep inside. List out his inner characteristics- his likes and dislikes, attitude, behaviour, thoughts... | There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.- Denis Waitley |
Don't get into the feeling that some people are born leaders or achievers. It is a choice you make to be a leader or an achiever and it is not something some people are born with. Failure is painful. But don't let the pain turn into fear- it stops you from attempting anything in life. | Whatever humans have learned had to be learned as a consequence only of trial and error experience. Humans have learned only through mistakes.- Buckminster Fuller |
