Body Needs
Your body needs just seven basic elements for living a healthy life.
Body needsYou need not adopt difficult ways to stay healthy or follow complicated steps to good health. Your need just seven basic elements for living a healthy life:
- Air
- Water
- Food
- Regular & complete body detox
- Proper exercise
- Sufficient rest
- Good thoughts
Even though the needs are simple, we fail to provide most of them because of ignorance and/or negligence and sometimes due to wrong information and land in all kinds of health problems.
The 1st Item in the list of 'body needs' is Air Avoid polluted air. Breathe as much fresh air as possible and in sufficient quantity. The later part- sufficient quantity of air- is more difficult. During normal activities, we don't concentrate on our breathing. Our lungs do not expand and contract properly, resulting in insufficient air in and out of the lungs. To supply sufficient quantity of air, proper breathing-in, breath retention and breathing-out are necessary. Certain breathing exercises help to get enough air. Pranayama is a holistic breathing exercise.
Practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders. -Andrew Weil |
Pranayama is one of the 8 limbs of Yoga. It is the rythmic control of breath- inhalation, exhalation and retention. Through Pranayama you get- - Strong respiratory system.
- Calmness of nervous system.
- Control over desires and cravings.
The 2nd Item in the list of 'body needs' is Water Water is essential- - For normal function of the cells.
- To flush out waste matter from the body.
You body needs clean water in sufficient quantity. Mineral water or boiled water is good, if the immune system of your body is poor. But if your immune system is good, any reasonably clean water is ok- Your body's fighting forces will take care of you. But many of us are ignorant of the quantity of water we should drink. More than 90% of us drink much less quantity than required. 'How much' and 'when' to drink are very important.
How much water do you need?
There is no unanimous agreement on this. People say different things. Most of them say 10 to 12 glasses of water a day. How much is one glass? If we take 200ml is one glass, it amounts to 2 to 2.5 litres. This is much below the body's requirement. Average adult needs 4 to 5 litres of water per day for healthy functioning of the body.
This table gives you specifics for different age groups:
| Age group | Required water | |
| Below 1 year | 300ml to 500ml | |
| 1 to 5 years | 1 to 1.5 Lt | |
| 5 to 10 years | 2 to 3 Lt | |
| 10 to 19 years | 3 to 4 Lt | |
| 20 to 60 years | 4 to 5 Lt | |
| 60+ years | 3 to 3.5 Lt | |
| Pregnent women | 4.5 Lt | |

When should you drink water and when you should not?
If you are wondering 'Are there rules even for drinking water?',Yes. There are and it is essential to follow them. People drink water when ever they feel like- just before food, during eating and immediately after. Some take a gulp after every mouthful of food. Some can't even swallow food without water- chewing is not their 'cup of tea'.
These are unhealthy habits. Chewing food is a must. By chewing properly, you produce saliva and start the digestion process right in your mouth.
Healthy habits of drinking water: - Never drink water just before a meal, during a meal or immediately after a meal, except in emergency.
- After drinking water, give 30 minutes gap before taking food.
- After food, give two hours gap before drinking water.
- Drink a glass(200ml) of water every 20 minutes.
- Finish 1.5 Lt before breakfast, 1.5Lt between breakfast and lunch and 1.5lt between lunch and dinner- adjust your total intake (as per age group) between these intervals.
- Avoid drinking water after dinner if you have a tendency of getting up frequently in the night for urination.
The 3rd Item in the list of 'body needs' is Food Which is healthy food? Seven nutrients are essential for proper and healthy functioning of the body. Food that can supply all the 7 nutrients in the desired proportion required by the body is healthy food.

Foods for human consumption: - Leaves
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Roots
- Nuts & seeds
Among the 5 foods, nuts and seeds contain all the 7 essential nutrients. In sprouted form, the nutrition value increases many fold and much more easily digestible.
I did not include Non-vegetarian here since human body is not designed for its consumption. Further, it takes very longe time and uses up more energy to digest and the fibre content is zero. Go for vegetarian- it is best for physical, mental and spiritual health.
The best way is, eat food the natural way- without cooking. At least 60% to 70% of your daily intake should be in natural form- including fruits, nuts and seeds.
Your daily intake can be: - Morning- 250 to 300ml of mixed vegetable juice + 2 spoons of honey. Squeeze in 1/2 lemon. You can mix 30 to 50ml of wheat grass juice to vegetable juice.
Here is a book that nicely explains the benefits of juices. This ebook Miracle Juicing tells you ways to good health- without drugs, vitamins or nutritional supplements. You will know the link between diet and diseases in ways that might surprise you. Enjoy health with fiber rich nutrition from healthy fruits and vegetables and eliminate stress from your life. |
- Breakfast- Sprouted seeds, nuts and dry fruits. Include 3 or 4 varieties.
- Lunch- Cooked food. Include plenty of leafy vegetables.
- Snack time (One hour before dinner)- Fruit juice, tender coconut water, sugarcane juice: Any one of them.
- Dinner- Fresh fruits preferred. Include 2 or 3 varieties. Early dinner is good.
If you could not manage vegetable juice/wheat grass juice in the morning, substitute with fruit juice.
Wheat grass juice:
The molecular structure of wheat grass juice closely resembles that of human blood. It is called 'green blood' by many nutrition experts. Wheat grass juice gets digested and absorbed quickly in the body and mixes with the blood fast. The elements of wheat grass improve the functioning of vital organs such as heart, lungs, and kidneys.
To extract juice from the grass, put the grass in a mixer, add a little water and grind it into a smooth semi-solid form. Pour it into a cloth and squeeze.
Wheat grass juice should be taken daily early in the morning on empty stomach. Do not eat or drink anything for about half an hour after taking the juice. You can have 250 to 300ml of juice daily. |

Let me introduce you to the most silent and tasty health-killers that we love to consume daily and can't live without them. - Salt
- Oils/fats and their variants
- Sugar
...dangerous in that order.
Most of the diseases come from eating too much salt. Our body requires 400mg of sodium per day to maintain health. Salt has 40% sodium. Average adult consumes 9 to 10gm of salt per day, which amounts to 3.6 to 4gms of sodium.
Salt intake is much more, up to 20gm per day, in places where people eat dry fish preserved in salt, pickles made out of vegetables soaked in salt or any food item soaked in salt. Since salt is a good preservative, it is used in plenty. |

Our daily food itself, without adding extra salt, contains more sodium than required by the body.
It is the extra salt sitting in our body that causes various problems. Eating salt-less food cures many existing problems and assures no fresh problems in future. The next culprit is oils/fats. Do not be mislead by cholesterol-free oils. Just avoid them. It is not difficult to manage without oil. Avoid sugar. Use honey and dates(sweet fruit grown in desert climate) in place of sugar. Eating without salt is difficult in the beginning- but imagine: to satisfy a small tongue, you are inviting body sickness, mental agony, running around doctors and hospitals, losing money, disturbed work schedules, trouble for the family and much more.
Which one do you prefer- good health or happy tongue?
Tips for eating salt-less food- Reduce the amount of salt gradually. Your tongue gets accustomed.
- Eat when the food is hot. Your tongue will have lesser complaints.
- Squeeze one or two drops of lemon juice on each mouthful before eating.
- If it is just not going inside, sprinkle a few grains of salt. Your tongue will be happy if one or two grains of salt touch its surface.
- Go for salads made of carrot, beetroot, coconut and green chillies. Grate and mix.
- You can bypass salt and oils with raw vegetables and fruits.
- Many leafy vegetables have more salt content. Make them part of your food everyday.

Your body accumulated extra water because of the excessive salt you were eating all these years. When you start eating food without salt or with reduced quantity of salt, this extra water will go away resulting in reduced weight. This is normal. But you can notice improvement in your health.
Caution: Your tongue may not like it without salt but you should eat sufficient quantity of balanced food to maintain your energy level and health.
Some more items to be avoided are: - Alcohol
